Communication with the Otherside

All religions, cultures and nations throughout the ages have acknowledged the existence of higher powers, angels, spirits or ghosts. Primitive man, First Nations, Greeks, Assyrians, Romans and other Early Christians all acknowledged psychic powers, divination and mediumship.

It was only in the 4th century that the Council of Nicae brought to an end the use of mediums. There was clearly an issue of power and a challenge on the authority of the church.

This has never prevented spontaneous and vivid experiences which have occurred in everyday situations to ordinary people and have transformed their lives.

Clockwise from top left: Guglielmo Marconi, Alexander Graham Bell, Sir William Crookes, John Logie Baird. Guglielmo Marconi, Alexander Graham Bell, Sir William Crookes, John Logie Baird.

Literature abounds with descriptions of such experiences whether real or fictional, we have all grown up entranced by the intrigue and yet in fear of such stories. Educated and knowledgeable people have attempted to make contact with the ‘dead’ and in their pursuits extraordinary discoveries have been made.

The first recorded direct communication between spirit and recipients occurred in 1848 in Hydesville, USA when the Fox sisters were able to communicate intelligently with a spirit through a series of table rappings. This news received wide publicity and indeed this experience became the foundation of Modern Spiritualism

What is fascinating is the fact that whilst this communication was seen as a revelation some would say that almost as extraordinary was that four years before the first electric communication had been sent across the Atlantic.

At the same time science was beginning to challenge peoples thinking and scientists felt that if they could communicate over the telegraph then they should be able to communicate with the other world. Marconi, Alexandra Graham Bell, John Logie Baird and William Crookes were amongst the scientific pioneers who became involved.

Throughout the years many remarkable people have supported spiritualism and used mediums

This interest was responsible for the development of electricity, photography, radio and television as each scientist tried to communicate with the dead. The scientists felt that their equipment would replace or replicate the communication which took place with a medium.

Interest didn’t just rest with scientists, respected literary and authority figures acknowledge their belief in communication, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the author of Sherlock Holmes proclaimed his support in 1918.

Throughout the years many other remarkable people have supported spiritualism and used mediums, it is well known that Queen Victoria used a medium to re-unite her with her beloved Albert. During the war Winston Churchill also elicited their services and even today many well known people utilise spiritual mediums regularly
